Robert Lawson, Structural Engineer, described creative and cost-effective structural solutions to some of the difficult seismic upgrade projects he has been involved in.

Wed., 22 Apr 98:

Mr. Mike Ibrahim, PhD. of Fyfe Co. LLC. discussed strengthening of unreinforced masonry (URM)
and methods used for strengthening beam, slab, and under-reinforced concrete elements.
This meeting was held at Buttercup Kitchen, 229 Broadway, Oakland.

Wed. 27 May 98:

Frank Kennedy, Walnut Creek City Engineer discussed the design issues, constructruction
constraints, and construction complexities of the Ignacio Valley Pedestrian Bridge project.
The proposed tour of the project was inhibited by rain.
- This meeting was held at the Buttercup Grill, 660 Ignacio Valley Road, Walnut Creek.

Walt Denmead, Project Executive/Preconstruction Mgr. of Turner Construction discussed
loss prevention design from a construction viewpoint.

Gary Vondran of Vontech Intl. Corp. discussed fiber-reinforced concrete using Fibermesh.

Dr. Adnan Adeeb of AMA Engineering discussed the effects of sulfides in concrete.

Professor Steve Mahn of UC Berkeley discussed the FEMA-funded SAC project to assess design
standards related earthquake hazards in Steel Moment Frame Buildings for both new and retrofit
construction.
This meeting was held at the Buttercup KItchen in Oakland.

Fri. 4 Dec 98:

Joel M. Josehart, Project Mgr. for Morse Diesel International, Inc., conducted a tour of the
Chabot Observatory and Science Center under construction on Skyline Blvd. in Oakland.

Wed. 16 Dec 98: A Christmas party will be held at Buttercup Kitchen, 229 Bdwy, Oakland.

Steve Pryor, S.E., Simpson Strong-Tie Technical Manager, explained the new "Strong-Wall" prefab shearwall that Simpson has been developing, which promises several advantages, especially for the typically short residential garage walls, and which is now being evaluated by ICBO.

Wed. 24 Feb 99

Jon Ewigleben, Plancheck Supervisor for the City of Oakland, explained his department's approach to the design requirements for private bridges. These are criteria that he developed himself for the City's adoption. This meeting was held in Walnut Creek.

Wed. 24 Mar 99

Jim Hodges, Northern California Representative for ICBO, will introduce us to differences between the 1994 UBC and the soon-to-be-adopted 1997 UBC. This meeting will be held in Oakland.
